Can Anyone Remove Bankruptcies From Your Credit Report?

If you’ve ever watched any late-night TV, you’ve probably seen ads for companies that claim to “erase” bad credit from your credit report. Some even say they can rebuild your credit for you. Have you ever wondered if there was an easier way to rebuild your credit score after bankruptcy?

The Federal Trade Commission warns against promises like these on its website. Companies that claim they can erase bad—but accurate–credit information from your report or rebuild your credit for you are not being truthful. These claims are signs of a scam.

No company can legally remove truthful credit information from your credit report. However, you can have inaccurate or outdated information removed from your credit report. If this happens to you, you can write a letter to one of the three main credit agencies and dispute the information that’s inaccurate.

The Credit Repair Organization Act made it illegal for a company that offers credit repair services to lie about what they can legally do. These companies are required to inform you of your rights under the act, give you three days to cancel without charge, and inform you of the total cost to you and how long it will take to settle your debt.

If a credit repair company doesn’t follow the law, you have some options. You can sue them in court to recover what you paid them, you can seek punitive damages, or join a class-action lawsuit against the company.

There is no shortcut for repairing your credit score. However, the other side of bankruptcy is much different that you would expect. The is a huge credit market for people who have taken care of their previous financial issues. Many credit card companies and automobile lenders will contact you after you file your bankruptcy to offer special financing and lending options.

After filing bankruptcy, the problem is not obtaining new credit. The problem is saying “No” to the many new offers you will receive.
