Fortunately and unfortunately at the same time, the Internet is a big place.
Today (October 3, 2016) , our firm received 2 phone calls from 2 different people in 2 different States presenting the following fact pattern. A similar occurrence happened on February 20, 2015:
Apparently someone is randomly calling people and claiming to be attorney “Christopher Benson.” The caller tells the recipient that a relative (or friend) has been arrested. The caller tells the recipient that the person in jail has requested that the attorney contact the relative and wire money to the attorney for bail money.
The telephone number provided by the caller is in the Dominican Republic. If you call the number, they will answer as Christopher Benson, attorney.
Therefore, we are posting this blog on our social media to alert people that our firm does not handle criminal matters and/or help people with posting bail. If you need a referral for a criminal attorney, we have those sources available.
If someone you do not know calls to tell you that a friend or relative is in jail, please call the person who is allegedly “in jail” first to find out if that is true.
Also, never wire money or send money to someone or some business that you do not know.
